The cover
drawing is by Karina, who is 15 years old and lives with her parents
and two sisters in the city of Quito, Ecuador. Her father,
Edgar, makes $160 a month as a janitor, while her mother is a
homemaker. Her family lives in a house made of concrete
block. They cook over a portable gas stove. Karina
attends high school where her favorite subjects are math, grammar and
social studies. When she is not helping her mother with
household chores and errands, Karina enjoys reading, singing and embroidery.
